DWMC – April 14, 2012
May 1st, 2012President, Missa Eaton, covered several issues in the April meeting. One topic was the Republican Party’s opposition to the Violence Against Women Act. Member and attorney, Bill Moder, explained that the the Republicans are attempting to dismantle important programs which are keys to keeping the protections in the Act strong and relevant. The new Pennsylvania Voter ID law and the problems it might create were also discussed. Missa updated the group on the progress of her campaign for Congress. Attendees remembered and praised a founding member of the DWMC, Kathleen Paul, who passed away in January.

DWMC President, Missa Eaton, covered topics of concern to all voters...but of particular interest to women.
Spuds & Suds Fundraiser – March 29, 2012
April 28th, 2012The Democrat Women of Mercer County held our 3rd annual Spuds & Suds fundraiser on March 29th, 2012. There was an amazing turnout for our largest event of the year. Auction items, music, a silent auction and tons of food & beverages were some of the many highlights.

DWMC Meeting – March 10, 2012
April 23rd, 2012President and candidate for the Pennsylvania 3rd Congressional District seat, Missa Eaton, opened the meeting with comments about the recent politically motivated attacks on women’s issues. “It is disturbing to me that we had all these conversations before I was born and now we are having them again.”
Missa also noted the passing of one of the group’s charter members, Kathleen Paul. Kathleen was a driving force behind the DWMC strategic plan and someone who always kept the group on track.
Rep. Mark Longietti, D-17, reported on happenings in Harrisburg. He stated that Gov. Corbett’s budget reduces educational funding by 100 million dollars although the secretary said there would be a large increase. According to Longietti, this is “fuzzy math”, since for the first time the pension fund obligation will be counted as funding for education.
Sandy Laurie gave a presentation for Women’s History Month. Sandy compared the treatment of women who fought for suffrage with the current battle for women’s rights. She concluded with an anonymous quote, “We would not let you oppress us in 1917; we sure are not going to stand for it in 2012.”

Party for the Party – January 21, 2012
February 2nd, 2012The Democrat Women of Mercer County sponsored a “Party for the Party” to kick-off the campaign season. Democrats from across Mercer County joined together for a night of food, fun and friendship.

Organizing for America Regional Field Director, Greg Waples, drove from Erie to speak to the attendees.

DWMC president, Missa Eaton, spoke about her candidacy (HR-PA3) and the importance of the upcoming elections.
