Juneteenth Celebration – June 19, 2010

July 5th, 2010

The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.

– U.S. Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, June 19, 1865

The Democrat Women of Mercer County once again joined the city of Farrell in the celebration of Juneteenth, the ‘official’ and long overdue end of slavery in this country.  Programs, entertainment and excellent food made this an enjoyable day for all who attended.  We distributed information and our talented member, Alane Jewel, painted the faces of countless excited children.  (The photographs of the children are not posted out of respect for their privacy.)
